Chapter 24

After Kaleb leaves, taking his ginormous bag of problems with him, I’m hit by the arrow of betrayal all over again. It tears at my heartstrings and stings in my throat.

As if it isn’t enough that Alex so obviously thinks of me as “one of the guys” and nothing more, let’s add Brady’s pity bribes to the melting pot. Does he really think I am so pathetic that he has to bribe someone to date me?

And what about Asher? I confided in him. I’ve never told anyone about my bizarre dreams or the strange readings I get from other people. So why did I tell him? Because I was really starting to like him. Now all I feel is the urge to punch him. Hard. In the jugular.

Well, there’s something I can do to retaliate, I remind myself.

I hang my jacket on the hook by the door and stroll through my house. There’s no better medicine for heartbreak than coffee and Chinese food. Both of which are situated in my favorite room in the house: the kitchen. Once the coffee is brewing, I take my phone from my pocket and call Alex. He answers on the third ring.

“What’s up, Nic?”

I’m so broken inside that I can’t even feel the rush I usually get when I talk to him. “Where are you?”

“Just finishing up practice. Hey, I’m glad you called. I’m gonna have to cancel our movie.”

Tears that have nothing to do with Alex sting the corner of my eyes. I wipe them away with my sleeve and clear my throat.

“Look, I’m sorry. Dave’s not doing so good and the coach wants me to try out for his position on the football team. I really think I can make it.”

“I don’t care about the movie,” I tell him.

“Are you okay?” he asks. He even sounds like he cares a little bit. Bonus for him.

“Yeah. I mean, no. I don’t know.”

“Wanna talk about it?”

My first reaction is to spill every tiny detail of what happened onto Alex so he can help me deal with it. Just as I’m about to, though, I get a strong sense that I shouldn’t.

“Not really,” I say. “I was just calling to tell you that I’ll go on the stupid date with Tyler.”

“Taylor,” he corrects me.

I wave my hand around like it doesn’t matter even though he can’t see me. “Whatever.”

“Really?” Alex exclaims. “That’s awesome. Thank you, thank you, thank you!”

“Just set it up before I change my mind.”

“Done, Thank –”

I don’t hear what else he has to say because I’ve hung up.

I pour a cup of coffee, mix in enough creamer and sugar to classify it as a treat, and sit down at the kitchen table. The newspaper is still spread out over the table where my father must have left it this morning. Trying to make room for my over-sweetened coffee, I flip the paper back to the front page and move it to the side.

And that’s when the headline catches my eye.
